As you may already be aware, I have been attempting to turn my backyard into what radio controlled dreams are made of. I shared with you the trials and tribulations of attempting to build an affordable, practical, useable, and portable off-road course. With the way certain obstacles turned out, I was not too hopeful of their ruggedness and dependability.

Recently, I regaled you all with the awesomeness that is radio controlled monster trucks. At the end of that, I left you with a cliffhanger of my latest project – building an undeniably kick ass (and maybe even portable) r/c monster truck course! Today, I will share with you my thought processes, failures, and ultimate success!
First up – my presumed failure. (I haven’t had a chance to test it yet, hence the “presumed” part…but it isn’t looking pretty!) My initial thought was that a 2 liter pop bottle would be a great size to create an obstacle for a 1/10 scale monster truck. My idea was to cut the bottle in half, fix it to a board, spray paint it to make it look a little more natural and realistic, then go nuts. And what would be better than two obstacles? More than two obstacles! Continue reading
As I’ve clearly stated before, monster trucks are undeniably awesome! Period. Last year, I introduced my wife to the greatness that is Monster Jam. She enjoyed it so much, she was eager to go again this year…and even brought friends with her!
On a side note: I have a ton of random hobbies to try to keep me mentally stimulated. I like working out, riding my motorcycle, playing the guitar, playing with my dog, messing with aquariums, painting, etc etc etc. Having said that, going beyond my passion for life-size monster trucks is my love of radio control cars (or more appropriately, you guessed it, monster trucks). For as much fun as my friends have making fun of my redneck tendencies, we couldn’t find a car big enough to fit everybody for this year’s adventure to the local monster truck rally. Once my friends see the twinkle in my eye and hear the pure, unadulterated excitement in my voice, they can’t deny that little voice in the back of their own head saying, “Hold on a second. Pickup trucks with massive engines and oversized tires?? Why have we not explored this idea sooner?!?”
Monster truck rallies are an undeniable cultural experience. Most of the general public just don’t want to acknowledge that fact. (yeah, you read that right…I said fact.) As much as some people like the opera or ballet, others like monster trucks, demolition derbies, and NASCAR. And for good reason…it’s exciting! Monstrous mayhem and colossal collisions?!? Yes, please. Continue reading
The National Football League isn’t normally known for “trying new things.” It’s called the No Fun League for a reason. It isn’t very often that the NFL decides to laugh at convention right in the face. Historically, the league has not been eager to have the Super Bowl in cities with cold weather. However, the times they are a-changin’. With the winter wonderland that Dallas experienced last year while hosting the Super Bowl, the NFL has decided that the game can still be successful if temperatures happen to dip below 60 degrees. Last time, I went to my first roller derby bout. I enjoyed it so much, I went back the first chance I got! After sharing the experience with a group of friends, I realized that I’m not the only one with an intense infatuation for the sport. So my wife and I loaded up our car with a couple of friends and headed into the sprawling northern Indiana cornfields.
After our hour voyage, we turned into the parking lot at Gibson’s Arena and tried to find a parking space. The lot was packed, so we just kind of “made” a spot somewhere in front of the building. It worked out great! Having spent almost a decade of my young adult life in Muncie, I had never been remotely close to the only skating rink in town. After going there, I’m not sure why. The decor may be a little out of date, much like most small-town roller rinks, but the floor seemed to be in good shape at least! Maybe a lot was hidden by the lack of lighting in the joint. We may never know. The image I had in my head last time, going into my first roller derby event, was validated this time once I paid the admission and walked through the entrance. The lights were dim (no matter what the picture below may reveal), the carpeted furniture was aplenty, and the concession stand was next to the pro shop, right where you would expect it to be. It’s baaaaack! After a long hiatus, Fresh Meat Friday returns with a slightly different spin on it. Instead of coming from the mind of a derby girl, who has actually lived these stories, this time I’ll be the one laying down the details. Which technically means this won’t be considered a Fresh Meat File by definition. But in a sense I’m still a noob to the sport, just in a fan capacity and not a participant. Being a dude plays a fairly large role in that part. So let’s get right to it, shall we? Yes. We shall. Thank you for being so agree-able.
I have been waiting to write this post for almost as long as I’ve had this blog. As a small child, I remember the wonderment that roller derby brought to my mind. Then, just a couple of years ago, it was brought back to my attention. I started noticing several articles and advertisements in the local newspaper regarding an upstart roller derby squad – the Cornfed Derby Dames. Since then, I have kept an eye out for anything regarding the quad-wheeled demons of skating rinks across the country. Drew Barrymore released “Whip It.” Larry the Cable Guy featured the sport on his History show, “Only In America.” I also found out that it was featured in one of my favorite shows, “Psych.” And that’s when I found out that one of my friends had been starting her career in the sport. So I reached out to her about guest writing on this blog and sharing her tales. From there, Fresh Meat Fridays was born, and you know the rest of the story. If not, then you should read up on the rest of the mini-series. Continue reading
